About Finbox

finbox review

Finbox helps professional investment decisions in equities for private individuals, financial advisors or asset managers with the right financial tools.

In short, all investment tools are online. They should be easy to use and flexible.

With its tools and data Finbox is now an app used by thousands of investors worldwide. Investors who want to decide on fundamentals and value investing will find the tools to act.

The co-founders of the Chicago based FinTech, Andy Pai, Brian Dentino and Matt Hogan who came from an investment banking group stress that they have put a lot of time and effort into building the tools and platform.

The result: evaluation models, analysis tools, templates, scenarios and data sets to determine the intrinsic value of stocks and make a decision.

Scope and bandwidth quick and to the point

Finbox stock screener is easy to use and intuitive. Users get the most popular fundamental and technical screens. Data is added to the stock daily.

The goal is to have a quick and complete view of a company. For this the user has a clean and structured dashboard. The main menu items of the dashboard are:

Watchlists

Under this menu item the user starts to create own watchlists. To do this one can copy entire shares from existing portfolios from the “Ideas” menu or create own lists. Additional inspiration is provided by the “most viewed” links in the sidebar. The premium version includes copying “ideas” portfolios, exporting data and more.

Stock Screener: Technical and Fundamental Analysis

After entering a stock, ETF or “idea” users can select filter options for technical and fundamental analysis. There are over 300 options, methods and metrics to choose from, categorized into:

  • Popular
  • Rating
  • Risk
  • Economics
  • Finance
  • Forecast
  • Diverse

The individual filters can then be further filtered with the operators “more than”, “less than”, “between” or “equal” and the respective values. The filters in the “Risk” or “Forecast” section are mostly or completely premium only. Export of the result data is also premium only.

Ideas: Fair Value Estimates

A great feature for beginners is the “Top Ideas” menu. Here everyone can search the most popular portfolios of well known and legendary investors, investment banks or trend topics, a great tool for portfolio management.

One example of the nearly 400 “ideas” is Warren Buffett’s portfolio which has 44 positions.

If the user wants to copy this idea for himself (“fork idea”) the values will be added to his own watchlist. The idea portfolios can also be further filtered by many aspects (rankings, size, dividend growth and performance or fair value).

Templates: Pre Built Financial Models

This feature offers 8 templates for financial models and filters:

  • Discounted Cash Flow (DCF)
  • Ben Graham
  • Dividend Discount Model (DDM)
  • Earnings Power Value (EPV)
  • Financial Ratio Analysis
  • Comparable companies
  • Capital costs
  • Return on Equity (ROE) analysis

The latest financial data is entered into the selected model template. The category of the company (e.g. “profitable”, “non-profitable”, “growth”, “mature”, “distressed”, “dividend” etc.) can be used to further filter the template. Finbox will also add more templates upon request.

Data Explorer: Financial Data

Users will learn definitions, trends and other technical screening techniques for assets supported by finbox, which provides deep financial data. The several hundred options, methods and metrics are categorized as in the “Screener” menu.

How To Guide

Here users get help and support. Besides links to explanation texts and videos for the areas “Start”, “Demo Screener” or the financial models used on the platform and methods (e.g. multiplier method, DCF, DDM, etc.) there are also a video tutorial on how to use finbox.

Classroom

Here users can find video courses like in a “classroom” to optimize the usage of the features (free) or to improve their investments (15 – 50 US dollars). But the recent price-reduced educational videos are very good introduction to financial accounting, valuation and accounting in practice.

Finbox limitations

While Finbox is a great tool for investors it has some limitations users should be aware of. One of the biggest is the steep learning curve. The many features and tools can be overwhelming for newbies and takes a lot of time and effort to get used to.

Another limitation is the limited technical analysis tools compared to other platforms. While Finbox has many technical indicators and charting options, advanced traders might find it not enough for their needs. Finbox data is not real-time which can be a problem for traders who need up-to-the-minute data to make timely decisions.

Customer support is another area where Finbox falls short. The customer support is limited and not 24/7 which can be frustrating for users who have issues outside of business hours.

Despite the limitations Finbox is a great tool for fundamental analysis and long-term investing. But users should consider these when deciding if Finbox is the right platform for them.

Finbox alternatives

For investors looking for Finbox alternatives there are other platforms that have similar analysis tools and financial data. One popular one is Seeking Alpha which has news, analysis and data on individual stocks and the overall market. This platform is known for its community driven insights and comprehensive market coverage.

YCharts is another alternative that has interactive charts and data on individual stocks and the overall market. It’s known for its user friendly interface and robust data visualization tools which makes it a favorite among investors who value ease of use.

Koyfin is a platform that has financial data and analysis tools for investors with a focus on high quality market data and customizable dashboards. It’s great for investors who want a more personalized analysis experience.

Bloomberg and Thomson Reuters are also great alternatives, they have extensive financial data, news and analysis tools for investors. These are used by professionals in the finance industry and has a lot of information to help with investment decisions.

Each of these alternatives has its own pros and cons so investors should consider their needs and preferences when choosing a platform.
