About Benzinga Pro

Jason Raznick founded Benzinga, the data technology and media startup, back in 2010. is very popular and has about 2,000,000 visitors a month.

Wihtin a couple of years, Benzinga Pro, the ultimate newswire tool, was born.

Since then, new features were added, the technology got better, and usability improved. The brand new stock screener and chat are the latest innovations.

I recommend that you sign up for the 14-day free trial.

Before we proceed with the Benzinga Pro review talking about specific features, let’s talk about the costs.

Benzinga Pro Cost

So how much does Benzinga Pro cost?

Their pricing model is easy to understand.

There are two subscription plans available: Basic and Essential.

But only the Benzinga Pro Essential subscription unfolds the full power of this trading tool.

For me, the Benzinga Basic subscription is not the best choice, but here are the details for the sake of completeness.

Benzinga Pro Basic costs $99/month paid monthly or $79/month paid annually.

Benzinga Pro Essential includes all features and costs $147/m paid monthly and $117/m paid annually.

However, there are two great options to save money:

1) Use the Benzinga Pro Free Trial

2) Use the 30% Benzinga Pro coupon code below to save instantly

Benzinga Pro Review

Okay, now let’s take a closer look at Benzinga Pro’s platform. Benzinga Pro is mainly a news-based platform.

“Mainly” because Benzinga also released a stock screener functionality a few weeks ago.

The platform is web-based, and you can run it from any device. Using it from your mobile is an option, and you can also use the Benzinga App.

However, using it from a personal computer provides by far the best user experience.

I run it on my 49” widescreen along with my Trade Ideas scans, and it's an incredible experience.

For example, SGEN came up on my scanners intensively about 10 minutes after the market open.

Trade Ideas Signals for Benzinga
Trending Stock Chart | Benzinga Pro

I was wondering why the stock is moving. So I went over to Benzinga Pro Newsfeed and found the reason for the move.

I chose “Newsfeed” in the left navigation, and then I typed in the stock ticker “SGEN” in the search field at the top.

Benzinga Pro Newsfeed

This way, I knew that there was a real reason for the move, and it was confirmed by volume activity. Piper Jaffray increased the price target to $95.

As you can see on the time stamp, this news at Benzinga was out before market open.

Anyway, my trading is based on stock screener signals. They notify when something is going on in the market, and with Benzinga Pro, I know what caused the move.

Not every catalyst or news event causes a price move and not every move is news-driven.

But when something is moving, then I like to know why.

That’s why Benzinga is an excellent addition to my Trade Ideas scans.

Of course, Benzinga Pro can also be used for many other strategies and trading logic.

So let’s proceed with the Benzinga Pro review by taking a closer look at the newsfeed functionality.

Benzinga Pro Newsfeed

You can open the newsfeed right from the main site by choosing “Newsfeed."

Benzinga Pro Main Navigation

Once opened, all news data gets visible in one window. But this is just the most basic configuration.

Please, have a look at the following screen:

Benzinga Pro Categories

Five different filters are visible here:

  • Sources
  • Categories
  • Sectors
  • Watchlist
  • Desktop Notifications

When you trade based on stock screener signals, then you should, for example, activate ALL sources but not limit any of the other options.

Benzinga Pro Newsfeed Filters

Currently, six different news sources are supported. Check any of them when you want to accomplish a broad search.

If you prefer a search based on SEC filings, then chose SEC only.

Benzinga Pro News Sources

Later I will also talk about the pre-configured workspaces Benzinga Pro provides.

The categories filter is a great way to limit the news shown.

For example, if you're looking for all possible stocks but only for the hottest movers, then you can set the filter to “Hot.”

If you're looking for biotech FDA’s or Rumors, then go for those options.

Benzinga Pro | All Categories

Are you a biotech breakout trader?

Then the Sector selection “Sectors,” “Healthcare,” “Biotechnology” might be a great choice.

Remember, you can freely combine all those filters form each of the items under “sources,” “categories,” “sectors,” and “watchlists” in the way you prefer.

Benzinga Pro Bitotech

Let’s say that you're pretty good at trading 50 specific stocks.

You know how they move, you know how the market maker acts, and you know that there is always a good follow through to a move.

Or you prepare a daily watchlist before market open and want to stay focus on those stocks only during the day, or even during a week.

Then the watchlist is precisely what you need.

Watchlist Items Benzinga Pro

Let’s use FAANG stocks, for example. Add the five stock symbols in the search box and hit comma in between.

Benzinga Review | FAANG-Stocks

Finally, hit enter to add those tickers to your watchlist.

Watchlist Feature Benzinga

Now, let’s look at the watchlist filter again.

Watchlist Items Benzinga Pro

As you can see, you can combine all your filters and apply it to only one watchlist or even only one stock from one watchlist.

How to Handle the Newsfeed Feature?

IMO, the newsfeed features, should be separated into two different use cases.

First of all, you want to do a broad search for a stock ticker.

Let's say your Trade Ideas scan shows you five results, but you want to stay focus on the top two candidates.

In this case, all sources within Benzinga Pro should be checked.

Then enter the stock ticker and find the catalyst for a move.

But this broad search is not a great fit if you want to search for specific news events or catalysts.

That's because it's too broad with thousands of different news alerts each day.

The second use case is if you're looking for a specific event.

For example, unusual options activity, penny stock movements or SEC filings.

Let me also show you my five excellent news feed scans.

Benzinga Option Alert

The Benzinga Pro option alerts is a pre-configured workspace. I don't go through every pre-configured workspace, but I like to use the options alert workspace as an example.

Go to your main screen and chose "Options Alerts" to open the workspace.

Benzinga Options Alerts

Once opened, you will realize that the newsfeed is now limited to options plays:

Benzinga Options Alert

Those options alerts are based on BZ Wire news and / or signal source.

You could replicate this workspace on your own with some simple settings:

Chose the sources “Benzinga Signals” and/or “Benzinga Wire” AND the category “Options.” That’s it; you are all set.

Benzinga Pro Option Alerts
Options Categories Benzinga

Later in the Benzinga Pro review, I will also talk about the Benzinga Pro Options Alerts signals feature.

But for now, let’s continue with the newsfeed feature.

Benzinga Penny Stocks

There is no direct way to limit the newsfeed to penny stocks only.

However, there is a filter for small caps.

You can add a filter in “Categories” and chose “Small Cap.”

Small caps are not necessarily penny stocks, but many of them are.

Benzinga already included a pricing range filter in their new stock screener.

So, let’s see if Benzinga’s developer team adds a penny stock filter in the newsfeed as well sometimes in the future.

Benzinga Penny Stocks Scan

We talked a lot about the Benzinga News now, but what are great newsfeed keywords to start with?

The 5 Best Benzinga Newsfeeds (1 Bonus)

Let’s talk about newsfeed keywords. Keywords?

Exactly, keywords – you can use them to filter down all the news to a little small list reflecting the stocks with the best profit potential.

Here are five (+1) different keywords being worth a subscription to Benzinga Pro:

Topline Results

Type “topline results” into the search box at the upper left.

Topline Results News Scan Benzinga

Check out the stocks being listed in the results for the specific dates.

Look at those charts with the trading timeframe you prefer.

If you do not recognize yet how easy it is to use this one little scan in your favor, then test it by using the Benzinga 14-day free trial.

Here are five more good keywords to start with:

  • Statistically Significant
  • Primary Endpoint
  • FDA Approval
  • Takeover
  • Reverse Stock split

Again, subscribe to Benzinga’s 14-day free trial, type in those keywords and check the charts based on the date, and time provided within Benzinga Pro.

It has never been easier to create trading strategies based on news.

Super Bonus for Your Convenience

Those alerts can pop up at any time during a day.

You don’t have to stare at one all day long. Use the desktop notification feature and sound alerts.

Let’s talk about the keywords one more time.

They are so powerful!

If you found some news that caused a huge move, then look at the newsfeed text to see if you find a new keyword.

Use this keyword to see if the same phrase or keyword ever caused similar moves with other stocks.

That’s a great reverse-engineering hack, and this alone can get your trading to a whole new level.

Also, make sure to unleash the full power of Benzinga Pro by using their workspace features.

You can organize your workspaces by adding different alerts on one screen and also add different workspaces organized in tabs.

Benzinga Pro Bonus

For me, the newsfeed is the most powerful feature of Benzinga Pro.

But this extended Benzinga Pro review would not be complete without explaining more exciting features in more detail.

Details, Calendar, and Movers

So far, we've talked about the newsfeed and the watchlist feature.

Now let’s have a quick look at the features “Details,” “Calendar,” and “Movers.”

Benzinga Pro Workspace

After that, we proceed with in-depth information about the Benzinga Pro Signals and the Benzinga Pro Stock Screener.

If you click on details, then a pre-configured window mix will open.

At first, it doesn’t look that interesting.

But by taking a closer look, you will realize that this workspace has a lot of power.

Benzinga Pro Details

There are two main navigations in the detail view. The upper one contains the following navigation items:

  • Overview
  • News
  • Calendar
  • Chart
  • Financials
  • Peers

The overview combines a chart and some news sources. The news tab shows only the news.

The chart tab opens an in-depth chart powered by TradingView, while the calendar view allows you to show even more data options.

Benzinga Search Results

The calendar functionality is a separate one available on the dashboard. For that reason, I will skip it for now.

The financials tab within the Details workspace reveals more financial data – quarterly and yearly for the sub-categories:

  • Balance Sheet
  • Income Statement
  • Cash Flow
Benzinga Cash-Flow

Investors and fundamental traders will love this feature. You can efficiently analyze company financials.

Finally, peers are the last tab within the details workspace.

It lists companies similar to the one you have chosen.

With this setting, you can find sympathy plays.

You can also compare stocks in the same business at a glance regarding their market cap, revenue, float and many other possible data sets.

There are so many settings just in this subcategory that it would completely blast this Benzinga Pro review talking about any of those in detail.

So, let’s move on to the last two major workspaces – the calendar and movers workspace.

Now let’s talk about the calendar workspace.

Calendar Workspace Benzinga

Is this just another earnings calendar?

It’s not just another earnings calendar. It's the best I have come across so far.

Once selected, the calendar might look boring at first. But there is so much power behind it!

Do you see all those red markings below? All of them are filters and functionalities, making the Benzinga Pro calendar a unique tool.

Benzinga Earnings Calendar

Let’s start in the upper left with the search box. Type in a company of your choice and Benzinga Pro will show you the latest earnings:

Benzinga Pro Search

I especially like the colors and the quarter differentiations. Also, it's very intuitive and can be sorted based on your preference.

From EPS, estimated results, real results, and surprise in %, everything looks solid.

But there's more. Let’s say you're interested in a specific stock like AAPL in this example.

You can see the earnings data, and you can sort the table based on your preference.

Now, let’s click on “Earnings.”

Benzinga Search Results

A new drop-down opens:

Benzinga Pro Earnings

As you can see, Benzinga Pro provides

  • Analyst Ratings
  • Conference Calls
  • Dividends
  • Earnings
  • Economics
  • Guidance
  • IPOs
  • Retail Sales
  • SEC Filings
  • Secondary Offerings, and
  • Splits

This way, you can check the most important dates for your specific stock.

However, you can also apply a broad search for specific criteria.

Let’s say you don’t care about AAPL, but you like to see stocks with the following criteria:

  • Period: This Week
  • Action: Upgrades
  • New Rating: Outperform
  • Analyst Firm: Wells Fargo

Sounds impossible?

Not impossible with Benzinga Pro:

First, click on the date range within the calendar functionality and select “This Week.”

Calendar Navigation Benzinga

Now open the “Filters” at the right and chose the drop-down for

  • “Action on Security = Upgrades” and
  • “Analyst Firm = Wells Fargo.”
  • Also Chose “Rating” to select “outperform.”

The results are filtered now:

Benzinga Pro Filters

Pretty cool!

This Benzinga Pro feature alone provides plenty of opportunities to evaluate new trading strategies.

So instead of paying for a trading course, you can step right into the analysis yourself.

For example, analyze past moves, and the effect of different catalysts like earnings and analyst ratings.

See what effected the price in which way.

I like to trade earnings with tons of volume, low spreads, immense gaps, and clean moves.

What caused a huge gap up in the past, and how does the stock usually react to earnings surprises > 100% above estimations?

With Benzinga Pro, you can do precisely this.

The movers’ workspace is something some of you may don’t need.

It's actually a stock screener scan where you can sort a list of stocks based on your criteria.

Nothing fancy here, but good to have it available.

Benzinga PreMarket and Benzinga After Hours

Let’s say you're looking for the biggest gainers in the pre-market hours.

But only stocks with a market cap between $300M and $2B are what you are looking for.

Also, you like to filter down the results to stocks with a price range from $5-$10.

Here are the settings for such a scan:

Benzinga PreMarket

I see this feature as a nice value add.

But it’s not that beneficial for me since I use Trade Ideas for my gap and mover scans.

Trade Ideas scans in real-time, while Benzinga does refresh the Movers workspace data once a minute.

Anyway, it’s great that subscribers can use it along with the Benzinga Pro Essentials subscription at no additional costs.

Now let’s get to another Benzinga Pro workspace called “Signals”.

This one is pretty cool again and very intuitive.

Benzinga Pro Signals

Signals – Option Activity

We talked about an options scan earlier in this Benzinga Pro review.

As I said before, there is also another option scan within the “Signals” navigation menu.

To open the signal based screen, chose “SIGNALS” in the left navigation and “Option Activity” at the top.

Benzinga Options Activity

This is pretty awesome because you can identify unusual options activity.

Besides the options activity, you can also select:

  • Price Spike
  • Block Trade
  • Halt/Resume
  • Opening Gap
  • Highs
  • Lows

One thing that I really like here is the fact that you can export the data as CSV-File.

Just make a right-click to some point within the results, and this menu will appear:

Benzinga Pro Export Functionality

Alternatively, you can also copy and paste the table to your program. How cool, fast and easy is this?

Want more?

Let’s say you're looking for option activity for stocks with a share float between 500M and 1B, shares outstanding between 200M and 1B, and also only in the healthcare niche?

Here you go:

Benzinga Pro Signal-Filters

Do you have a fear of missing out when an alert pops up?

Well, check this out:

Benzinga Desktop Notification

You can play a sound, use desktop notifications, and even use a synthesized voice to get aware of the alert.

By the way, this fabulous notification functionality is not only available in the signals workspace!

The newsfeed workspace, for example, also has a desktop notification system.

Benzinga Stock Screener

Benzinga’s stock screener is in beta mode right now.

Benzinga Pro Stock Screener

You can use it, for example, to scan for stock with a price range from $1-$5

Stock Screener Pricing Filter Benzinga

Once you filtered down the results to stocks with a price range from $1 to $5, you can sort the table based on various columns.

You can add more columns as well.

However, please note that stock screener results are not connected to newsfeed results.

Sortable Columns Benzinga Pro

I like to see the Benzinga stock screener be officially pushed out from the beta mode before getting into this feature in detail.

But from what I have seen so far, the filters are interesting for traders and investors.

Right now, there are 31 different filters for fundamental data, and 21 for technical data.

So you can scan for EPS, Dividends, Profit Marin, Float, Gap, and many more.

I expect that this feature will be further developed during the next few months.

By the way, you can export the data with one click at the symbol at the top right:

Benzinga Stock Screener Data-Download

Right now, the stock screener is included in the Benzinga Pro Essentials subscription.

It’s another great addition to Benzinga Pro’s main purpose being a fantastic newsfeed.

With all the additions we talked about, Benzinga is an exciting hybrid trading tool covering many more things than just news.

Benzinga Radio Squawk Box

You can be alerted by desktop notifications, sound, and synthesized voice.

The Benzinga Radio Squawk box takes it even a step further.

Day traders are always busy, and using eyes only can be a disadvantage trading based on major news.

See Also: Day Trading for Beginners

That’s why the Benzinga Radio Squawk Box is a great addition for day traders.

So, if you have only one monitor and if you have multi-tasking abilities, then this feature is what you need never to miss any major news again.

Use your PC audio and listen to the hottest news that drive the market.

But again, this is only useful if you trade based on news.

If you trade based on signals, then you never have the right audible news suiting the price alerts from your scanners.

What else can I say than give it a try!

Also, this feature is included in your Benzinga Pro Essential subscription.

Benzinga Pro Review Summary

As a day trader, I usually don’t care about specific fundamental data.

But knowing the cause of a move helps to evaluate the potential of a trade even better.

And that’s what I use Benzinga Pro for.

I mainly use it in the way that I run my Trade Ideas scanner and check the catalyst for the move in Benzinga Pro before making a decision.

This costs me a few seconds and is worth the time.

On top of that, I did start monitoring their “Unusual Options Activity” signal feature.

I am primarily interested in OTM options with short durations and tons of contracts traded.

If someone places such a “bet,” then he or she often knows something that others don’t know.

Also, using the newsfeed with “SEC” as a source and “form 4” in the search bar reveals heavy insider transactions.

If you see a CEO buying 100,000 shares of his company, then it might be worth taking a closer look at it – right?

There are so many great advantages to using Benzinga Pro.

Again, the news feed is their bread and butter.

And Benzinga has tons of competitors covering the newsfeed functionalities.

But Benzinga Pro is a complete solution with incredible value-adding capabilities being worth the price.

You can save your workspaces, and you can create multiple workspaces and scroll through them, similar to your browser tabs.

You can filter down the results to specific criteria and export results to a spreadsheet.

Whenever I had a question, the support team answered my question within minutes.

If you have any questions during your free trial or your regular subscription, just hit the blue button in the lower right corner.

Their team typically replies in under 5 minutes.

Whenever I contacted them, they responded within 1 minute. That’s amazing!

I hope that this Benzinga Pro review is helpful for you.

I will add more content over time when Benzinga releases further features, or when other major improvements happen.

There is just no reason why one shouldn’t give the 14-day free trial a try.

It’s a no-obligation free trial; it does not require a credit card and simply expires after 14 days.
